IJsbrekers

What makes contact between strangers sometimes self-evident, sometimes awkward?

This interactive installation investigates how art and music could influence these accidental meetings.

During my internship at Project IJsbrekers, I was part of the multiple processes that came into play with setting up this project. My biggest responsibility was the overall branding: the logo, illustrations, website, social media etc. I also assisted in the Make-with evenings, and all the brainstorming and creative processes that came after. Next to helping with developing and designing the installation, I spent some days with a paintbrush and a saw in my hands to build the installation.
Project ijsbrekers started with literary reviews, in which we researched what makes contact with strangers nice, awkward or unpleasant. The second step was to translate the research into an actual thing. For this, we had so-called Meemaak avonden (make-with evenings), in which we invited the people living in the neighborhood in which the installation would be put. Together, we came up with a concept for the final installation. Charlotte van Otterloo came into play to build the installation. Now, the installation is up and running, traveling around Rotterdam-IJsselmonde. In the end, a toolkit will be made. The idea is that the toolkit brings together the approach and the insights gained during the testing of the intervention, to enable other creative professionals and other professional connectors to develop their own evidence-based intervention.
